VALCAVALLINA

SURROUNDINGS

The Val Cavallina, according to the territory orography, can be separated into two zones. The first, more to north, is strongly marked by the presence of the Lake Endine. The valley in this zone is quite narrow with the lake boxed among the surrounding mountains (Torrezzo and the San Fermo hills) with an intact nature.

Also the human settlements are circumscribed to the town complex of Endine Gaiano, Spinone al Lago, Ranzanico, Bianzano and Monasterolo del Castello. The second part, more to south, is characterized by the flow of the river Cherio. Although it presents some torrential characters, marks this valley.

This river directly rises from the Lake of Endine between Monasterolo del Castello and Casazza and goes on touching all the other communes of the valley: in the order Vigano San Martino, Borgo di Terzo, Luzzana, Entratico, Trescore Balneario, Cenate Sopra and Zandobbio. And then the valley opens toward the plain.

The first settlements in Val Cavallina go back to Paleolithic and Neolithic, with finds near Trescore, Zandobbio, Luzzana and Vigano. The following ages, marked by the development of metals, have left numerous finds, especially in hilly places: at the Buca del Corno at Entratico, on the Pranzą mountain in Vigano San Martino, on the Bastia mountain in Cenate Sopra and in the place Canton in Trescore Balneario. This last area is considered a place of notable archaeological thickness, since some installations that go from the Neolithic to the age of the copper have been discovered.

Later, around in the I-II century B.C., the valley has been conquered by the Romans, as the numerous discovered burials (Grone and Zandobbio) and the origin of the name of numerous villages: Blandianum, become then Bianzano, Gaiano and Luzzana. At Casazza there are important rests of buildings gone up to II-IV centuries d.C., found a short time ago and so not completely studied.
After the centuries of the early Middle Ages, the Val Cavallina had a new development thanks to Suardi family: with their great wealth they built castles (Bianzano and Monasterolo) and fabulous residences (Trescore), reviving the economy of these places and its trades. After the end of of the age of the seigniories, the valley started to have some quiet moments, following the destinies of the rest of the other villages of the province, from the Venice Republic to nowadays.
